Annie Besant was considered more than a little eccentric in her day but much of what she achieved in her lifetime, we now take for granted today.
Annie Woods was born in London in October 1847. She wasn’t what one would call a happy child. Her father died when she was just five and Annie’s mother in effect abandoned her and persuaded a friend (Ellen Marryat), the sister of British Naval Officer and relatively prolific writer Frederick Marryat, to take charge of the young child.

Romanian Dog Rescue
I’ve just received a rather distressing email from my local animal sanctuary. Apparently next year the EU are relaxing laws for the importation of dogs into the UK from Romania without undergoing lengthy periods of quarantine.
It appears that Romania have been under the ever watchful eye of Hillside for some considerable time and have seen first hand the sort of abuse these dogs have to endure but, up until now, other than a touch of human kindness and some limited veterinary care they’ve been powerless to get them back to the UK
