You may never have heard of Aphra Behn but she was an extremely popular and highly regarded English playwright and novelist in the mid 17th century. In fact, she is regarded to be the first “professional” woman writer of English literature. But Aphra was more than just a writer – she had an incredibly interesting and fascinating life.

The first Africans who were brought to American soil were not slaves. They were treated as indentured labourers, released after a period of time, given land, supplies and cash.

Between 1619 and 1654 all Africans were Indentured labourers. Then Anthony Johnson, who had been such a labourer, brought a suit before the Court to have a declaration, that another black man, John Casar was his slave.
