The first Africans who were brought to American soil were not slaves. They were treated as indentured labourers, released after a period of time, given land, supplies and cash.
Between 1619 and 1654 all Africans were Indentured labourers. Then Anthony Johnson, who had been such a labourer, brought a suit before the Court to have a declaration, that another black man, John Casar was his slave.
