This photo shows just how beautiful these birds are. I just love the dark marking from the beak, across the eye to the extended plumage at the back of the head, and I’m just so entranced by the “cloak” of long white feathers around his shoulders and down his chest. He’s certainly not the most elegant of birds, but his ungainly stance is far outweighed by his beautiful plumage!!

On our walk back from Salhouse Broad we decided to sit for a while on an old tree trunk where there was a gap in the reeds. Suddenly, Adam whispered that there was something moving on the opposite bank of the river.

After sitting still for a while watching a female grebe sitting lazily on her nest, Adam spotted the male swimming home (from the left). Initially we thought he was bringing a fish to his wife, but once we’d got home, uploaded the pictures and zoomed in we could see that he actually had a piece of reed which he placed on the nest.
