New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport slowed to a turtle’s pace Wednesday morning when around 150 diamondback terrapins entered tarmac space, searching for traditional beaches to lay their eggs, delaying flights for around 30 minutes.

Getting an early start to their day, the turtles began crawling onto the tarmac around 6:45 a.m. and began their flight delay escapade. According to TIME, the phenomenon is an annual occurrence around this time of year when the turtles migrate from Jamaica Bay Park, next to the airport.
