Alvarez had studied the work of his colleague Juan Vucetich, head of the bureau of statistics for the La Plata police. Vucetich had discovered a method of analyzing and classifying fingerprints that made them easy both to file and, equally vital, to retrieve. Until then, the police authorities had largely ignored his work. But because of the Rojas case and subsequent successes, Argentina adopted fingerprinting as its sole method of identifying criminals – the first country in the world to do so.

When the Galapagos were discovered by Spanish explorers in 1535, hundreds of thousands of giant tortoises roamed the islands. (Galapago is the Spanish word for tortoise.) Survivors of prehistoric times when reptiles were of enormous size, some of the tortoises grow to four feet in length and weigh as much as 500 pounds. They may live for more than a century.

Astronomers spot asteroid just ONE month before it is due to pass close to Earth
Astronomers have spotted a large and 'potentially hazardous' asteroid heading towards Earth and it is only less than a month away from passing within four million miles.
The object is 150 metres in diameter and has been named '2010 ST3'. It was discovered using the Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) PS1 telescope in images taken on Sept 16 reports Mail Online, when it was about twenty million miles away.
