The DS is a great toy, but increasingly there are educational games being released for the DS, for both adults and children. Here is a list of the best ones in my opinion. My personal favorites are Brain Age and Brain Age 2.

There are a lot of debates whether or not children should spend their time playing video games. While sitting in front of the TV all day is not healthy, and you should not use the TV as a babysitter, some educational games and game systems like Nintendo Wii are actually quite healthy for children.
