Creativity Linked to Mental Disorder Among Some Writers and Creative People“Great wits are sure to madness near allied.” - John Dryden.
A poet should know; there’s a good reason to believe that certain mental disorders are unusually common among creative writers. Nancy Andreasen, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Iowa Department of Psychiatry, studied thirty faculty members of the university’s Writer’s workshop and found that 80 percent of them had a history of disorders such as depression, compared with 30 percent in a control group of professionals with less creative jobs.
