As an ad agency creative director for 30 years (and now a film director), I've always had a special appreciation for the art and science of brand identity. You've cited some great examples and, since you asked, I'm happy to give my opinion on them:
Gap = Could use improving but the new graphic is bland and offers no value.
Animal Planet = What's the new message? No improvement.
AOL = I actually like this one and, since the old identity has lost all its caché, this new graphic concept could help.
