In 2009 the H1N1 "influenza virus", better known as the swine flu was the cause of the first global "flu" pandemic in more than 40 years and caused substantial illness, hospitalizations and deaths as reported by the CDC.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly "flu shot" as the first important step in protecting against being infected by the "influenza virus". The U.S. 2010-2011 seasonal "influenza vaccine" will protect against the "influenza" H3N2 virus, influenza B virus and the 2009 H1N1 swine flu virus that emerged last year.
