Stalactites (from the Greek stalaktos, ‘oozing out in drips’) hang from cave ceilings. Water oozes out of cracks in the ceiling and as it evaporates it leaves behind tiny deposits of calcium carbonate. Initially these create hollow tubes. Eventually the tubes clogs up, and water runs down the outside, creating the typical stalactite shape.

Frost occurs when moist air comes into contact with a colder surface.

Air frost when the air temperature is 0 calcium (32F), or lower, as measured 1.2m (4ft) above the ground.

Fern frost Feathery patterns that form on the inside of cold glass when dew freezes.

Hoar frost Forms in damp air. The water vapour freezes directly onto a cold surface. The surface must be colder than the air and below freezing.

A mature hurricane consists of bands of thunderstorms spiraling round a calm central area called the eye. An average hurricane can reach up to 970 km (600 miles) in diameter and contain hundreds of storms. They produce winds up to 250 km/h (150 mph), intense rain and ocean surges. They can last for weeks and travel thousands of miles.

The science of weather forecasting became established during World War I. forecasters drew an analogy between the way warm and cold air masses continually jostle for position, and the interminable advances and retreats of armies on the Western Front. As a result, the boundaries between different air masses became known as fronts.

Most of the underground fresh water on the planet is stored in it. Some sedimentary rock contains the fossil remains of past life. Also, because sedimentary rock is made up of the remains of earlier rock, it provides clues to the Earth’s biological history.
