Historically the roads around Battambang have been full of potholes. Many travelers have forgone traveling this way due to the extensive damage done to the roads from the heavy rains that occur however, recently the roads have been paved over and what used to be a 5 hour grueling trip can now be easily undertaken in about two hours.
Situated close to Battambang is the small city of Pailin where tourists go to purchase rubies and emeralds, and gamble at the casinos on the border. The bus trip from Siem Reap to Battambang is approximately 5 hours. The bus trip from Phnom Phen to Battambang is approximately 8 hours and Battambang it is approximately 2 hours from the Thai border. This is an open border crossing, crossed by only a few, which makes for a fairly easy cross.
There many things you can do in Battambang including walking around the peaceful town, talking with the monks at local Wat (Temple), you can wander around the markets, watch satellite TV in your room, rent a Tuk-Tuk or a bicycle and ride along the river. A motorcycle is recommended for the 11 km from town to the small 11th century Khmer temple of Wat Ek Phnom.
