Yesterday I discovered something pretty odd -- and interesting. While killing time before a press screening, I popped by a bookstore here in Malmö, Sweden, and browsed the American comics. There I found a couple of books in the original Smurf series. The Smurfs were created in 1958 by the legendary Belgian artist Peyo (Pierre Culliford, 1928-1992), the books started coming out in Sweden during the early ‘70s and started a Smurf craze -- this was long before the American Hanna-Barbera TV cartoons.

Now, among the titles I found yesterday was a volume called “The Purple Smurfs”. Huh? I’ve never heard about that one before. I leafed through it and realized that, hey, wait a minute -- this is the classic “The Black Smurfs”! Somebody has edited the whole story and made the black Smurfs purple!

The Smurfs, a very popular cartoon TV Show from the 80's is one of my favorites cartoons show. I remember watching the smurfs over and over, especially during the weekends. They were so cute. Papa smurf, Smurfette and the other Smurfs are still bringing joy so much joy to so many people.

Picking up where the last movie left off, Gargamel is still in the modern world living off whatever is left of the smurf essence he attained in the last movie, as he's now become an international celebrity due to his magic acts.

However, he knows his fame is short lived, and he still yearns to take over the world, so he hatches a plan to kidnap Smurfette, and then forces her to give him the formula that'll turn his latest Naughty creations into smurfs, so he can harvest their essence.

These Smurfs could rank a little higher, but I'm going to just round them down to a full 7. They're pretty cute little decorations and if you collect the regular Smurf line you'll want to add these guys to your Smurf village each year at the holidays. As stocking stuffers they would be great for kids, but for regular nerd collectors you're probably better off getting something else at this price point. Have a Smurfy Christmas!
