The Shire horse is a pure draft horses. It is the tallest draft horse bred. A stallion may stand 18 hands (180 cm) and weigh nearly a tonne (910kg). The shire horse and its relative the clydesdale horse were brought to England by William the Conqueror. On stallions were brought to carry knights and it is assumed they were bred with native mare.
