The opening titles play over a prologue that takes place in Spain during the Dark Ages. No, the Dark Ages aren’t those awful years in the early 1980s when grunge was popular (and washing your hair wasn’t), but the Middle Ages. Father Esteban (Richard Moll) is some kind of satanic priest, wearing a hood and all, and he and his gang are up to bad things on a beach, when members of the church arrive and banish Esteban and his devilish mob from Spain.
Then we skip to present time -- about thirty years ago, that is. Clint Howard, who was 22 when this movie was released, is young cadet Stanley Coopersmith. Not only that -- he also has hair! Yes, we get to see Clint Howard with hair on his head. Coopersmith is not only an orphan, he’s also an outcast, he’s a terrible soccer player and he’s bullied by the other cadet. Heck, even the teachers at the academy seem to hate the nervous Coopersmith. And those teachers … Now, that sure is a strange bunch of people. Especially one officer with a cliched Nazi haircut and who speaks with a thing German accent. R.G. Armstrong plays Sarge, who’s drunk and grumpy most of the time. And they keep malicious pigs in the place.
The very sinister Reverend Jameson orders Coppersmith to clean up the basement of the church, and while down there, our poor, bullied hero finds an old book that once belonged to, guess who, yes: Father Esteban! The book is crammed with satanic information and explains how to perform a black mass. Time for revenge!
