International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900’s. It is celebrated annually on March 8th and in some countries such as China, Russia, and Vietnam International Women’s Day is a national holiday. In the United States however, Mother’s Day – an annual celebration honoring mothers and celebrating motherhood - seems more popular. In contrast, International Women’s Day honors the economic, political and social achievements of all women independent of motherhood. March 8th 2011 is the 100 Year Anniversary of International Women’s Day (8 March) “a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.” In some places like China, Russia,Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women’s Day is a national holiday.

But alas not everywhere in the world. For women in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia it’s just another day to dress down, cover up, follow the religious and moral laws and do whatever rich men want them to do if they want to get on in life.
