Sage (also known as garden meadow or Salvia officinalis in Latin) has been used for culinary and medicinal purposes for many years. It was even used as a meat preservative in ancient times. In medieval times, it was often referred to as toute bonne, which means `all is well.` It has many benefits, ranging from being an excellent memory enhancer to being a natural breath freshener. It is even found in commercial mouthwash products.

I just read the complete

I just read the complete article - first of all, as a linguist (and, coincidentally, English-French bilingual), I liked the little fact about "sage" once being called "toute bonne" meaning "all's well" or simply "good" - that it evolved from that to being called "wise" is a great example of a living language evolving through time.

I was delighted to read about the many uses of sage. I have used it in the kitchen - but not medicinally. My garden and the surrounding meadows and forest are awash with wild sage so I shall make more use of it.

The whole family currently has a bout of spring flu with sore throats - we'll be gargling with hot sage later !
