Carats represent the weight of a diamond. Small diamonds can be a fraction of a carat such as 1/4 or 1/2, larger diamonds will be full carats such as 1, 2, 3 etc. Larger diamonds don't have to be exact round numbers, you may see diamonds on sale at 1 1/4 or 2 1/2 carats. The heavier the diamond, the more carats it is. Some people think that a carat represents the size, it does, only because the heavier a diamond, the bigger it will be. But carats don't measure size at all. In rings Diamonds can differ in size despite being of the same carat weight. This is due to the way a diamond has been cut. An Ideal Cut diamond for instance is longer and thinner and a lot of the stone is obscured from view by the ring setting. A thin cut stone has less height and therefore more width which sits on top of the ring setting and therefore makes the diamond appear bigger.
