George Bibb Crittenden was something of a revolutionary soldier throughout his lifetime. He certainly had something of a rebellious nature: George fought against the Mexican Army for an independent Texas in the 1840s, and he sided with the Confederacy when the Civil War began between the states.

A bad defeat in the clash with Union forces at Mill Springs, Ky., caused him to be transferred off the front lines.

Hampton, Wade (1818--1902), a United States politician and Confederate army officer. At the opening of the Civil War, Hampton raised a body of infantry, cavalry, and artillery called "Hampton's Legion." He was made a brigadier general in 1862, second in command to General "Jeb" Stuart.

Hampton was born in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of a wealthy planter.
