Off to War

We've become immune to the pain and agony of sending our loved ones off to war. Sure we see the families on the news, crying, hugging and children clinging to their father's and mother's legs. We sigh, wish there was no war, and change the channel.

For those of us who have had to send those we love off to war, not once, but many times, it is a heart wrenching moment. An experience that brings emotions to the surface of our hearts and minds that will never be forgotten.

In Honor of Family and Friends on Memorial Day

I spent most of my time Sunday either at cemeteries or on the road to cemeteries in honor of Memorial Day. I drove my parents through four cities to pay tribute to lost loved ones. There is a graveyard behind their house in Lawrence, but we also visited Ottawa, Scipio and Garnett—all small towns in eastern Kansas. (It should be noted that a short distance west of Lawrence is the famous Stull Cemetery, but fortunately a trip to the source of numerous urban legends was not on the agenda.)

It is typically remembered through gravesite visits and flowers, and cemeteries across the country are beautifully adorned by thousands of visitors with flowers, balloons, flags and sometimes more personal offerings. It can be a time for fond remembrances of days shared with family and friends, but for some it stands as a grim reminder of the sadness associated with losing a loved one before their time.
