Three weeks later the doctors grafted nine sheets of the boy’s own cultured skin onto his lower abdomen, replacing some of the cadaver skin. More operations followed, including a few conventional grafts, using skin taken from the boy’s scalp. After six months his wounds were 85 percent healed and more than half of his body was covered with his own, laboratory grown skin. Not long afterward his suit of grafted skin was completed.
