Elephants belong to the order Proboscidea. There are two species: the larger is the African elephant Loxodonta africana, which occurs in savannah grassland and forests throughout much of Africa south of the Sahara. The elephants found in these two habitats are generally regarded as two subspecies: the savannah elephant L. a. africana and the forest elephant L. a. cyclotis. The so-called Cape elephant L. a. oxyotis is regarded by some as a full subspecies. It is confined mainly to the Addo National Park in South Africa.
