In one of the epic fight, the Taliban employed a Russian-made ZPU — a 14.5 mm anti-aircraft gun. Towed behind a vehicle, it could fire 600 armour-piercing shells a minute, to a distance of 8km. A Warthog commanded by Lieutenant Andrew Maggs was fired on. Disconcertingly, he had to drive more than a mile towards the weapon before he was even close enough to return fire with his own, smaller-calibre machine gun armament. The Warthogs, which carried only machine guns, found themselves outgunned and out-ranged. However, they were eventualy able to prevail over the Taliban and the Peace Street was completed.
