My memories of Saint David’s Day include the girls in their National Dress and us boys going to school with a Leek pinned to our clothes. A real, smelly Leek and sometimes there would be a prize for the largest Leek. Being young boys the Leeks didn’t last. During the day we would all be nibbling away until, by the time we went home there would be nothing left except a sorry looking root.

You really don't hear much about the Welsh, mainly because there's not a huge pool of Welsh in Britain, so therefore there wasn't a lot of them to come over. Also, it seems that the Welsh think it bad form to toot their own horn. However, March 1 is St. David's Day and St. David is the patron saint of Wales, it's a good time to look at the Welsh contribution in American history.

March 1st is Saint David's Day. The patron Saint of Wales and this is a day of national pride. David, or Dewi as he is known in Wales was a 6th century Monk and missionary who did much to convert Britain to Christianity. He was canonized by Pope Callactus II in 1120AD and the day of his death, March 1st, was added to the Church calendar as his feast day.
Before he died he made a speech with the words;
"Arglwyddi brodyr a chwiorydd, cadw deich ffydd a'ch cred, a fyddwch ffyddlon yn y pethau bach."
