Before the IceDogs. Before the Thunder. Niagara Falls had a Junior ‘A’ hockey team called the Flyers. The 1964-65 version of the Niagara Falls Flyers dominated the OHA and then dominated the Memorial Cup.

The Flyers finished the 56 game regular season with 36 wins and atop the eight team OHA. Although not the top offensive team in the league, the Flyers allowed 29 less goals than the next best team, the Peterborough Petes. This was due to the goaltending tandem of Bernie Parent and Doug Favell. Both would play together again for the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers.

The Art Ross Trophy has been awarded to the leading point-getter in the National Hockey League each year since the 1947-48 season. Over the 61 years of the trophy’s existence, eight players have won the award in consecutive years.

Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings was the first NHL player to accomplish this feat. Howe won the Art Ross four times in a row from 1950-51 to 1953-54. Over his illustrious career, Gordie would win the award two more times, both while playing with the Red Wings.

Ontario Hockey League grad Nathan Robinson finds himself without a home after recently being released by Adler Mannheim of Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga. Robinson was in his third season (2nd consecutively) with Mannheim and his fifth in the DEL. Rumour has it, Nathan is off to the Vienna Capitals of Austria’s Erste Bank Eishockey Liga.
