With the Vancouver Canucks fresh off their first ever President’s Trophy victory and on the road to the franchise’s first ever Stanley Cup championship, it’s a good time to reflect back on the history of this great team.
The Canucks, along with the Buffalo Sabres, entered the National Hockey League for the 1970-71 season. This was the second wave of expansion to hit the league since the ‘Original 6’ NHL was doubled in size for the 1967-68 season.
A spinning wheel was used to decide who would get the first overall draft pick in 1970, Vancouver or Buffalo. Buffalo won and chose Gilbert Perreault. Vancouver chose second and took a defenseman, Dale Tallon.
