Many people would be surprised that it is the good zoos which euthanize some of their animals and the bad zoos do not. The good zoos are about protecting species for the world for future generations. The bad zoos are about the here and now and are more interested in lining their own pockets than considering the future. Good zoos manage. Bad zoos do not.
Sadly it is the good zoos which are attacked by the press and public who often do not to take the time or trouble to consider the implications of what are involved. This articles hopes to try and explain what is a large and complicated subject in the easiest understandable way.

People become puzzled when they learn of zoos culling healthy animals. Surely zoos are meant to be saving animals and not killing them? Difficult though the idea may be to grasp zoos are saving animals, saving whole species for the long term future. Part of the saving requires that the numbers are managed.
No-one likes to put animals to sleep least of all zoo staff who dedicate their lives to the well being of their charges. Animals are put to sleep painlessly and kindly by people who care.

Towards the end of 2009 the CZA (Central Zoo Authority) in India announced that all elephants in Indian Zoos were to be moved out and into 'Sanctuaries', forest camps and tiger reserves. This was the authorities way of dealing with the problems facing elephants in some Indian zoos. The decree failed to recognise the needs of individual elephants or that the conditions in some zoos were extremely good.

Animals in zoos are stripped of control over their natural lives. They cannot choose a partner, roam, fly or climb. They are forced to have human interaction. This is the ultimate disrespect of a species. Their eyes hold a lifetime of sadness and emptiness.
