Earth is a spectacular planet when viewed from space. It is a 4.6 billion year old blue sphere and it appears to be a perfectly round sphere out there, but it is not. The Earth bulges out at its equator by an additional 83 miles compared to the circumference taken from pole to pole. This is small amount with respect to the circumference but it is enough to make Earth an imperfect sphere. This bulge occurs because the earth is spinning at an amazing speed of approximately 1,040 miles per hour about its axis at the equator. If you live on or near the equator you are moving around at 1040 miles per hour right now. Our planet is also moving around the sun at an incredible speed of about 67,000 miles per hour and it still takes one year to complete one trip around the sun.
