Angel Meadow, North Manchester district, near Ancoats, Shudehill and Collyhurst, source of my family history following the Chappell clan’s dramatic escapes from the massacre of the French Hugenots in the 15th Century, and our work as navvies. This feature describes the area regarded once by Marx and Engells as a classic British slum of terrible proportions, deep in poverty, and grime with its giant migratory mill rats, and its cholera victim mass graveyard, through to how my first name was handed down over at least four generations. The Meadow has now become one of North Manchester’s most beautiful scenic areas. My family history on my Father’s side of the family.
