So, you think you want a tattoo

It seems like tattoos are everywhere these days. Once thought to be the markings of degenerates and criminals, body art has become mainstream, with everyone from teen-agers to professionals sporting tattoos visibly. So, how do you decide where to place that first tattoo? A lot of it has to do with personal preference, but your life style and work place are important to take into consideration. That little cross on your ankle, the heart with your loved one's name in it on your shoulder, or arcane symbol in any visible spot may prejudice people against you, especially in the work place. No matter what it is you are planning for your first (or 10th) tattoo, placement is something that should not be entered into lightly. A tattoo is a lifetime commitment, unless you can afford the price to have it removed, which is way more money than it is to get the tattoo.

My advice for placement of your first tattoo is someplace that you can wear it (show it) when you want to and is easily covered with normal clothing for those times when you may feel it inappropriate to display. One of the benefits of doing this is, should you decide you regret your tattoo, it won't be something that plagues you with its existence by being able to see it constantly and by people asking you about it. Trust me. People always have questions about tattoos on other people. A lot of women with long hair that get a tattoo they don't want to constantly display will place it on the back of their neck. Though this works for a percentage of the time, consider how often you put your hair up and for what occasions. The company Christmas party or business dinner may leave you having to leave your hair down when you would have normally worn it up in order to cover your ink. Wrist tattoos, even the most beautifully done, leave the 'wearer' in the position of potentially having to wear long sleeves in weather too warm to be comfortable. Ankle and lower leg tattoos are visible with knee length skirts and with shorts.

All in all, tattoos are a beautiful way to appreciate art. It is the highest praise of the artist. As with any long term commitment, thorough thought must be given and the pros and cons weighed before moving forward. Good luck and happy inking!!
