Bookmark and Share The Bare Basics: Eye Make-Up I

During the series, we'll be looking at eyeliners, eyeshadows, mascara, false lashes and, of course, how to apply and the various looks we can achieve. Another important feature to include is eyebrows, which frame the eye and are essential to our overall look.

I'm sure it's going to be great fun.

But to begin with, we'll have to look at our own eyes and decide their advantages and disadvantages. This determines the type of make-up we can use, and what we should take into account when wearing certain styles.

I've also included eye colour and the strictly text book guide of which colours enhance which; rules we no longer need to strictly adhere to.

So let's cover these two themes now, before moving on to the really creative stuff.

Know the magic of mascara and other beauty regimen :

Manage wrinkles by massaging the eye area with a nourishing cream or eye oil.
For those with small eyes, make them larger with smokey eye-shadow and lots of mascara. For an extra romantic look, put more highlights and shadowing.
Pluck eyebrows in the direction of their growth. Use soft- feathery strokes with an eyebrow pencil to fill-in sparse brows.

During the 1950s, a smudge of green or blue eye shadow was used to bring out the eye colour and seemed to have no other purpose.

Looking at the Maybelline advertisement (right), I can't fathom the purpose of the lady's eye shadow at all, although she seems to be having a whale of a time with it.

We've come a long way since then.
