The Second in a Series of Hubs Dealing with Eye Make-Up
Black kohl was first used to line the eyes in ancient Egypt and India in order to prevent the sun from blending; since black absorbs light, it diverts the sun's rays from entering the eye.
We use it nowadays, first and foremost, to accentuate the eyes. But it can do more than just that.
Small eyes can be made to appear larger, large eyes smaller, or hooded eyes more open. It can be used for shading and as a base for other make-up. There are shades to suit every purpose and every colour type, just as there are various types of eyeliner.
Liquid, applied with a brush, draws a clearly defined line, like that in the above photo. Gel is easier to apply, and has a softer texture. For an even softer, matte effect, there is loose or pressed kohl powder (applied with a brush) or compressed kohl in pencil form.
