If the oil companies discovered a carburetor that got 200 miles per gallon, what are the odds that consumers would ever see that product? Would utility companies tell us about a free source of electricity if they found one? It is unlikely that any corporation would put a lot of money into researching something that has the potential to put themselves out of business. The business of medicine is no exception.
Let's be honest here. Do we really think that pharmaceutical manufacturers of insulin are secretly hoping for a cure for diabetes. Certainly not from a business point of view. How about blood pressure medication or so many other products that keep us alive but never really cure us. Why sell a product that will only be used once or twice to cure, when you can sell that same patient a product that must be used everyday for the rest of their lives. Healthy patients don't buy pharmaceutical drugs.
