Before swimming in public pools, lakes, rivers, or oceans, check the water safety for bacteria levels. Go to http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/beaches. Symptoms of water illnesses include: skin infections, diarrhea, ear, lung, and eye infections. E.coli0157:H7 is a prevalent germ in contaminated waters. If a sign is posted for public health reasons, do not swim in the water. Recreational activities such as boating, skiing, and fishing in unsafe water can still cause water illnesses. It is possible to breathe in some of the germs in unsafe water.
