Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) was listed in the Mental Disorder Manual in 1980. This disease is more common in women but the characteristics are very distinctive. Adults with this disorder admit they have struggled with the patterns for a long time which indicate they probably began when they were children. There is a lot of evidence that suggests environment, such as stress, trauma, abuse, and other factors during childhood playing a strong role in many psychological problems, including personality disorders

These individuals typically have a pattern of unstable and intense relationships. Individuals with BDP act impulsively in at least two areas: excessive gambling, spending money irresponsibly, binge eating, alcohol and/or drug abuse, engaging in unsafe sex or driving recklessly. They can fly into a rage over any little thing so if you are living with someone that has BPD you are usually walking on eggshells to try and keep things peaceful. This is a very stressful way to live, particularly if there are children involved.

There is no medications specific to treat BPD; it takes therapeutic treatment and the individual must desire help. If they are not motivated to get help they will not get better.
