In Sweden, Easter is called “påsk”. That’s pronounced “posk” and not “pask”. The holiday begins with what Anglo-Americans call Maundy Thursday, which in Sweden is called “skärtorsdag”. Skärtorsdag actually translates as Cutting Thursday.
There are several things that differ Swedish Easter from Easter in other countries. There are lots more traditions and odd ingredients in the Swedish celebration. First of all, we have what’s called “påskris”. That’s the equivalent of the Christmas Tree. Påskris is a bunch of twigs from a birch stuck in a vase. Then the twigs are decorated with colorful feathers.
