Failing a grade or being held back for other reasons is a very tough decision for both parents and educators. Kindergarten is also tough on the parent and the child. Many parents worry about whether their child is ready for Kindergarten and seeing them venture off into the world without their parent for the first time can be stressful. This becomes especially hard for everyone when the child does not succeed as well as expected or hoped for. Parents worry that their child was not ready and they wonder if holding them back will help them to mature more. Teachers wonder if holding the child back will help them to better master educational objectives and be more successful on down the road. These sound like good reasons to hold a child back. Right? Wrong!
It is far more complicated than that. First of all, we tend to make retention in Kindergarten the first intervention we resort to when, in fact, it should be an intervention of last resort. Before you make the decision to hold your child back in Kindergarten, know the alternatives, know the research on retention, and think long term, not short term. However will this impact them in the future? This is an inside scoop from a master educator.
