Marriage is a social institution that evolved through ages. It certainly played a vital role in making the human society more civilized and cultured. It has a religious sanction. In particular in the marriages of a Hindu, Muslim and Christian, the religion plays a significant and predominant role even today. For example, in a Hindu Marriage, time immemorial customs like ‘Saptapadi’ i.e. going around the fire seven times, so as to get it solemnized, is in practice. In the case of a Christian Marriage, a marriage is solemnized in a church and conducted by a religious head. In the case of a Muslim marriage, an Islamic religious head called Maulvi conducts the marriage.
The ultimate purpose of getting married is to beget an offspring. However, of late, the marriage has become a more personal and legal institution than a social institution. With the advent of LGBT marriages, the institution of marriage has lost its pre-eminence as a social institution and it has become a mere contract and formality with its own legal consequences.
Of late, the institution of marriage has also undergoing a sea of change in various countries both in the east as well as the west. Recently, the Philippine Senate has seriously begun its discussion about giving a time frame for a contract of marriage just like other legal documents. Considering marriage as a contract marriage with a time frame is a radical departure from what has been hitherto in practice and it has got its advantages as well as disadvantages.
