How to Grow Long Beans in your Terrace.
I was staying in a house with limited lawn space, some time ago in a far away place from for work. I had some free time after work. This was not place for some social life. I prefer vegetarian food and much interested in slightly oil fried bean cuts. I decided to look around to find some space to grow some leafy vegetable, beans. Looked around found a small space in terrace.
I thought out an idea and used available resources. This worked well for me. I like to share this with you too. It required only little things. I found four numbers plastic bag which could hold about 20 Lbs of mud. Also I found one small tree trunk with some branches and leaf in it.
Then I filled it one forth portion of mud with some gravels. On top of it I cut the leaves and filled with it from the truck. Then again I filled it with mud to the top. Now bags are three forth full.
I placed some bricks on the terrace. Over that I placed the four bags in corners touching each other. In centre there was a hole. Here I placed the tree trunk and tightened with some fibrous thing like coconut husk and added mud to it. I added a pinch of turmeric power from my kitchen on the mud and mixed it to prevent ants entering and avoid eating the bean seed. Then I pierced three holes in each of the bag to drain the excess water. Now watered the entire bed and kept for ready.
I socked the seeds in water and kept for four hours. I planted three pole beans each in one bag around one inch deep. Seeds were started sprouting around three four days time. It started growing day by day and crept on the pole.
I used to water it everyday. If I am not there at home I fill water in the middle portion where I have the fibrous thing before leaving. Then I place another plastic bag filled with water pierced a tiny hole in it and leave on the middle. This was feeding water for three days. In terrace garden you would not find many pests. I used to check and remove pests from it. The yield was good I used cut it out when necessary. The rest I mad into seeds and distributed among my friends.
Pleasure in doing this will bring you immense pleasure .That is the biggest bonus for me.
Summary:
Use only bags which can hold 20 pounds of mud and about 15 to 20 inches tall.If you want organic vegetable do not add any chemical fertilizers.Choose one type of beans only and use. Otherwise cross pollination will take place and you will get some different type of beans that you do not like to eat.Soak the beans for 2 three hours in fresh water and plant in the night.
