For the first time, the Winter Olympics will be held by the sea and some venues, such as the Richmond Olympic Oval, are at sea level. Also, for the first time ever the Opening Ceremony for a WinterOlympics will be held indoors.

On 12 December 2008, Innsbruck (Austria) was elected as host city of the first Winter Youth Olympic Games at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. Innsbruck won the vote against Kuopio (Finland) by 84 votes to 15.

The Innsbruck Youth Olympic Games in 2012 will be based on the seven sports included in the Vancouver 2010 programme with a limited number of disciplines and events. Approximately 1,000 athletes between the ages of 14-18 will compete, and the Games will run from 13 to 22 January 2012.
