This is a very good adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel. This may be a TV-movie, but it actually played theaters in several countries around the world, and there’s a good reason for that. “Dracula” is much above your average made for TV horror production, especially of that era.

The teleplay was written by none other than Richard Matheson (who wrote the novel “I am Legend”) and it follows Stoker’s familiar story rather closely. Murray Brown plays Jonathan Harker, who travels to the mysterious count in Transylvania to help him out with his business and moving to England. After being locked up in the gloomy castle, Harker realizes Dracula isn’t your average count, especially after seeing the guy climbing the wall like a spider. When I was a kid, I found one of these early scenes exceptionally scary -- the one when Darcula’s brides suddenly appear in Harker’s room. Harker is facing a wall a listens to a moody tune from a music box, and when he turns around, he’s facing three creepy vampire women, just standing there, staring at him -- and then, hissing and flashing their fangs, they attack the poor visitor. One of the brides is played by Sarah Douglas who later was Ursa in the Superman movies; this was her debut.
