You know that at some point or another you've probably wanted to learn to play the guitar. You also know that after you realized that truth you went down to a music store, and were blown away by just how expensive the guitars that your favorite musicians play really are. Here's a secret for you - when you start off playing the guitar, you don't need a Martin or a Gibson - you just don't.

Martin gutiars are the finest guitars the world has in it, and the price of a solid wood construction Martin guitar will quickly tell you how proud they are of their guitars, and how proud the owners of such guitars are. Hold off on buying a Martin until you know that playing the guitar is something that you are going to be doing with your time, and for many years to come.

Buying American is best - but the best starter to intermediate level guitars are all made in Japan, and sold in America for very reasonable prices. Japanese guitar manufacturers also make some damn fine professional level guitars.

A great starter guitar that I know of and have played is the Jasmine guitars by Takamine. It's more of a series of acoustic guitar models than it is just one specific model. I've seen them priced, and for sale on the link that this leads to for anywhere from a hundred dollars to four hundred dollars - that's all the guitar that you need for you or your child, or whoever you are buying for to start off. It's also a guitar that you won't want to get rid of even if you do play, play often, and play well enough to need or want a high end guitar like a Martin or a Gibson. That Jasmine by Takamine is and will always be the guitar that you take with you hiking, camping, hunting, boating, or anywhere else that you go where you don't want to chance damages or theft of a one to ten thousand dollar Martin acoustic guitar.

Whether you are talking about Takamine, Alvarez, or Yamaha - Japanese acoustic guitars generally provide more value for the money spent. I'm not saying that Japanese guitars are better guitars than are high end American made guitars - no, not at all. What I'm saying is that to get a really good guitar, a professional grade instrument even, you can get a Japanese made one for less money than you can an American made one.

Of course there will always be exceptions - but by and large, my statement is true.

If you're paying attention to me, and you shouldn't - then you can clearly see that I'm a guitar snob. I'm big on acoustic guitars that cost over a thousand bucks, for the most part; and the more the better.

You shouldn't think that I own a lot of expensive acoustic guitars. I own exactly one expensive acoustic guitar - but I've owned several in my time, and I'd like to own a whole lot more of them before my life is over - even if it's just in passing.
