Jar Full of Numbers

A jar full of numbers, shaken and stirred
Is all that they are, all that they were
Captive and blinded, yet seldom disturbed

Ushered and gathered, forever interned
Tethered and tarnished, by toil they are bent
Hedged close together, like pigs in a pen

No, It’s not I, not me, and not you
They say to themselves, doing as they all do
Yet helpless, deaf, and sightless they stand

Empty of heart, souls tagged with brand
Unable to feel, void of goodness and dreams
Even laughter is suspect, false sighs of their whores

I frequently have problems opening even jars which have already been opened once due to arthritic pain in my wrists. Assorted types of rubber grippers do sometimes work, but I often find I don't have the strength even to turn the lid.

My husband is actually quite romantic (though most would never know it) and while we were dating, he had picked up a book called “1,001 Ways To be Romantic”. The intention was that we would write all the numbers – from 1 to 1,001 (or those suggestions that were doable – not all of them are) on pieces of paper, put them in a jar (really big jar), and once a week we would each pick out a slip of paper and whatever number was on that paper, we would perform that romantic gesture for the other.
